One Day at a Time - Today

One Day at a Time - Today
During difficult times, I have often been advised to live just one day at a time. Being anxious about the future causes worries about problems that haven’t arrived, destroying today’s peace of mind. Living with regret over the past keeps me depressed and stifles my peace today. It is interesting to note, from the bible, that God has been advising that we live one day at a time since the beginning.
  • Joshua 24:15 says “choose this day whom you will serve”
Joshua asked the people of Israel to make a deliberate choice. He said to choose “this day” to worship the pagan gods that they had left behind or to worship God their Creator, who had continually cared for them. Joshua said that, as for him, the choice was easy. He would worship the Lord.

Even though we each, as Christians, have made the choice to follow Jesus, we must make the choice either to serve him or not to serve him, every day. Without a conscious choice, old habits are sure to return. Self-centeredness, greed, lack of humility, lack of compassion, and anger, are all symptoms of serving those other gods- the gods we left behind.

  • Psalm 118:24 says “this is the day the Lord has made”
Not every day is happy. There are difficult times and sad times. But every day is created by God. Hebrews 13:15 exhorts us to continually offer God a sacrifice of praise. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us to give thanks in all circumstances. I won’t wait for circumstance to change to my favor; I will rejoice and be glad on this day.

  • Hebrews 3:7 says “today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts”
The Israelites were in the desert for forty years because they forgot God’s promises or didn’t believe them. We tend to forget his promises too. Hebrews says that today, if we hear his voice – through the bible or that gentle nudge when the Holy Spirit is speaking to us – listen and follow his leading.

  • Hebrews 3:13 says to encourage each other every day, as long as it is called today.
Life can be hard. As a Christian, I am to be an encourager. I am to encourage others daily. When someone is in need of a kind word, I am to supply it, not wait for a more opportune moment or for when I feel like it.

Do I need help in living one day at a time? Always. But Jesus has said that he will never leave me nor forsake me. He is the same yesterday and today and forever.
