Home Business - A Brief History

Home Business - A Brief History
Home business is nothing new. The work at home phenomenon goes all the way back to the first enterprising cave dweller who realized she could stay at home - warm and dry by the fire - creating bear tooth necklaces that she traded for a chunk of meat the hunters dragged home. Smart gal!

From that point on straight through the 18th century, just about everybody worked at home. But, in the 19th century, the industrial revolution changed all that. People gave up their “cottage industry” lifestyle and moved to big cities to work in big factories. They really had little choice - that’s where the work was.

In the 20th century, the business of big business became dominant. The demand for higher education became paramount as more and more “white collar” workers were hired to manage the logistics of running big companies.

But there was another change back in the mid 70’s. With the sophistication of computers and telecommunications, people now had a choice again to work at home if they wanted. Ambitious Americans who were willing to take a chance on their entrepreneurial abilities began choosing to be responsible for creating their own financial future.

Some of these new entrepreneurs started small home businesses that eventually grew into huge corporations and the world will never be the same again. Phil Knight started Nike shoes in his parent’s basement. Steve Jobs and Stephen Wozniak started Apple Computers in their garage. And Michael Dell started building Dell Computers in his dorm room at college. They’re all now billionaires and successful role models for millions of other work at home entrepreneurs.

Today, in the U.S., there are nearly 14 million home-based businesses. About ten million of these home workers run full-time, primary income-generating operations. Although many are more than satisfied just being their own boss and earning an independent income, most are not billionaires. However, according to Kiplinger’s Magazine, at the beginning of the 21st century, the average self-employed income was $109,000, compared to the average household income of $58,800. So people running successful home businesses today are earning nearly twice the average income.

With all the other benefits (like staying warm and dry by the fire), a home business can be an excellent opportunity to create your life exactly the way you want it. You just need to decide what’s best for you.
