In this issue:

  • New Article: How to Lengthen a Vintage Bead Choker and Change the Clasp
  • Buying Supplies: Changes on Supplier Websites
  • Announcements: Contest Calls for Entries

This week, I logged my method for customizing a friend's short-short vintage choker into a more practical design. I found that by taking notes as I went along, I become more aware of the little tricks I use to make a design work properly in terms of sizing, colors, pattern, and lay.

The next time you take on a customization project or design your own complex beaded design, try jotting down the precise steps you took to complete it. You may save time during your next project by reviewing your notes and reminding yourself which methods worked best, and which didn't. As always, feel free to share your experiences in the forum!

Changes on Two Major Supplier Websites

If you shop online at Fire Mountain Gems and Beads or Rings & Things (I shop at both), you may be interested in some changes each recently made.

Rings & Things Price List Format Change

Rings & Things is a great supplier with a big, affordable selection, that specializes in offering bulk order discounts (minimum order $25, and a $4 processing charge on orders between $25 and $50). The discount you receive on a particular item depends on the quantity of that item you order.

Previously, in each item listing, the highest price (that is, the price for the smallest quantity) was listed first in the box, and the lowest possible price (for ordering the largest quantity) was displayed last. This has now been switched - the lowest price/largest quantity is listed first, and the highest price/smallest quantity is on the bottom (as shown in the image at right).

This is not a change in the way Rings & Things does its pricing - it's just a format change to be conscious of the next time you shop.

Fire Mountain Gems New $5 FedEx Shipping

If you live in the continental U.S. and make a few really large orders each year, Fire Mountain is now an even better place to make them. First they changed their bulk discounts to apply to quantities of assorted items - not just bulk orders of the same item. Now, they are offering fixed, flat rate $5.00 FedEx Ground shipping, regardless of weight, anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. They also charge a $2.65 handling fee, but for large orders, that's still not bad.
