Greetings from Siem Reap, Cambodia!
Arrived after a long transit from San Francisco via Bangkok here in the city of Angkor Wat. Walking amidst the ruins of an ancient culture is awesome. I have taken many photos as well as videos of the sights that I will be uploading to iFoo.TV upon our return to the states.
We are finding much of the food to be unremarkable. Perhaps this is partly due to the years of being without many ingredients (of course, keep in mind that most cuisines are far more subtle in comparison to Thai flavours).
Cambodian dishes seem to lack the zap of chiles and bright balanced flavours of hot-sweet-salty-sour and are on the sweet side.
I have enjoyed a popular dish here that contains fresh pineapple and fish that will be perfect with the addition of chiles. That recipe will be forthcoming in a future newsletter.
We did have a soup that was a bit like one of my Thai favourites which I am sharing wih you all below.
Sweet & Sour Chicken Soup (Kaeng Som Gai Wan) is a variation of Kaeng Som Fish Soup which is very common in North East Thailand.
