Beer Fox Tip of the Week:

Beer is a tasty treat with dessert.  Some pairings you may find inviting:

Infuse Tiramisu with a Sweet or Oatmeal Stout, rather than the traditional Kahlua.
Pair intensely "death-by-chocolate-style" desserts with Russian Imperial Stout.
Serve Chocolate mousse with British Porter.
Blend the light, orangey flavors of Strong Dark Belgian Ale with petit fours or spiced nut cakes.
Pair Raspberry Ale or Framboise with puddings or cream pies.
Serve Belgian Witbier with orange and citrus dishes.
Pair the rich flavors of Espresso Stout with Creme Brulee.

Beer News:

Tom Schmidlin of Seattle, Washington, USA edged  ahead of Diane Catanzaro and Warren Monteiro to win Beerdrinker of the Year 2006 in the Saturday, February 25th, p.m. finals at Wynkoop Brewing Company in Denver, Colorado. Before a panel of judges, Tom proclaimed himself  "Yeast Dork", bribing each of the judges with their own, personal  test tubes in which he cultivated yeast strains from Rogue Chocolate Stout.

Displaying his incredible knowledge, wit and passion for beer, Schmidlin surged to the finish line with his hard-line stand against terrorists who hold "hops" hostage, his heart-felt talk with a can of Milwaukee's Best, and his sacrifice in gaining over 4 pounds after drinking an impressive two growlers of beer throughout the course of the finals that lasted until 4:00 a.m.

As Tenth Beerdrinker of the Year, Tom won free beer for life at the Wynkoop Brewing Company, $250 worth of beer at his local brewpub, clothing proclaiming him Beerdrinker of the Year 2006, and his name engraved on the Beerdrinker of the Year Trophy displayed at Wynkoop.

Craft Brew of the Week Award:

Moylander Double IPA - Moylan's Brewery, Novato, California, USA
Style:  American Double IPA

A reflective, copper-red body sizzles beneath its dense head of off-white cream, emitting aromatics of toasted caramel and pine needles, grapefruit, citrus-orange, apricots, apples, melon and vanilla.

The tongue is painted with a surprising dash of sweet malt, then mellowed with resinous hops that lay soft and spicy on the palate.  Crystalline malt sweetness returns with each progressive mouthful, tempered in waves with a varietal medley of citrus and pinecones crushed on a forest floor.

Lays smooth on the tongue, potent and dry, yet spicy and warming, with lingering hop vine bitterness.
