May 12 2010 Deafness Newsletter

Hello friends

In the next few weeks life is taking a bizarre twist for me and this means I am unlikely to send newsletter emails. However, I have written articles in advance and a new one will still be available from the BellaOnline Deafness site each week.

What is happening? My husband is in the last stages of renal failure and he needs a kidney transplant. I have been tested and am compatible so next Wednesday two surgical teams are doing our transplant. I will be in hospital for a few days and him for a week or more. We are moving into a serviced unit just around the corner from the hospital so he can be a day patient for another month after discharge.

This means I am unlikely to have regular internet access and may not be able to send a newsletter. However, here's my latest article from the Deafness site at BellaOnline.com.

Once I heard again from two ears I realised that while I had heard the words I didn't understand the true meaning of bi-lateral hearing. Because it had been so long since I had heard with two ears I no longer had the hearing experience.

I didn’t understand bi-lateral hearing.
Before I had my 2nd cochlear implant I read all the brochures and asked other bi-lateral recipients to explain what the differences were between hearing with one ear and hearing with two ears. Most couldn’t easily articulate the differences but all said it was ‘better’. What did ‘better’ mean?
