Chamaeleons lived in lands exotic to 16th-century Europeans. Yet although color-changing lizards are fascinating, Chamaeleon the constellation is a small, dim southern sky constellation with no associated mythology. Why does it even exist? Is there anything of interest there?

*Birth anniversaries*

(1) May 16, 1951: American astrophysicist, professor and astronaut Sally Ride was born. Dr Ride was the first American woman to go into space. Her first flight was almost twenty years to the day after cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space.
(2) May 30, 1934: Alexei Leonov, cosmonaut, artist and writer, was born. Leonov was the first person to carry out a spacewalk.
