Renny Harlin directed "5 Days of War". Never one of Hollywood's A-list directors, Harlin was reaching for something more substantial than his usual action movie fare in this picture. A dramatization of the 5 day war that took place between Russia and Georgia, the movie has been criticized for its bias towards the Georgian version of events. Harlin did aim for authenticity in the making of the film. Scenes featuring the Georgian President Saakashvili, played by Andy Garcia, were shot in the actual office of the president. In his DVD commentary, Harlin says that while they were filming a scene, the president's phone began to ring. Everyone froze, until Andy Garcia picked up the phone and said, "I'm sorry. We're busy shooting a movie." And then hung up! Harlin never found out who was on the other end of that call.

The summer movie season has just begun, but distributors are already hyping their more serious fall releases. The trailer for Johnny Depp's September film "Black Mass" is online. Over the weekend, television ads started airing for the Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks film "Bridge of Spies", to be released in October. It is described as a Cold War drama/thriller based on a true-life story.
