Many NY Restaurants Ignore New Calorie Count Rule
Many NY restaurants are ignoring the law requiring calorie-count listings on menus, in hopes that a lawsuit in federal court will get the law thrown out.
*Tips*
It is so very important to watch your intake of trans fat – even when you may be mislead into thinking you are consuming “0 grams” as indicated on the box of your favorite snack. Know that there is a loophole with the FDA that states that if a food contains 0.5 grams or less of trans fat PER SERVING, then that manufacturer can claim “0 grams of trans fat” on the box. Let’s take a box of Ritz Crackers for example. When you add up the types of fats listed on the box and then subtract it from the total fat listed, 0.5 grams of fat is unaccounted for. This is where the 0.5 grams or less of trans fat loophole comes into play. This means that in one serving of Ritz Crackers, which is 5 crackers, you will be consuming 0.5 grams of trans fat. This adds up! With 26 servings in the box, the entire box contains 13 grams of trans fat! This is a lot more than the “0 grams” the manufacturer claims.
The moral of the story here is to look at the ingredients of foods. If you come across “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” anything, you are no doubt consuming trans fat – even when the box says otherwise. In the case of Ritz Crackers, an ingredient listed is “partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil” –a type of trans fat, and there's a whopping 13 grams of it to boot.

Additionally, if you are interested in, or currently practice homeopathy and alternative medicine, it is important to start a collection of remedies (if you haven’t already) in your home so that you have them during the first onset of symptoms. Homeopathy is very safe and effective, and especially effective during this time. To help you with your collection, I normally list any homeopathic remedies I have referenced in my topics at the bottom of my articles, so that you can easily and cost-effectively add them to your collection. Any remedy that I recommend you purchase, I myself own, and personally use for the specific symptom(s) it is intended for.
