With so many stereotypes, so much poverty on the reservations, it has been easy to “pigeon hole” us as a People. Prejudicial adjectives such as “lazy” and “drunken” are finding replacements with “industrious” and “innovative.” But are things on reservations really changing?

Earlier this year I watched John Stossel’s special “Freeloaders” on Fox News. His comments have been gnawing at me ever since. The show skimmed over much and completely ignored even more. However it did raise a point I’ve been pondering for some time. How can American Indians reclaim the self sufficiency and self determination of our Ancestors?

It’s most unhelpful to merely present a problem or issue without suggestions and possible solutions. Economic development is occurring on the reservations. Those creative and innovative examples will follow.
