I have been rereading some of my favorite self-help books lately (in preparation to downsize my stuff for moving overseas) and it got me to thinking how science has come back to religion as a source for information on healing and health. For much of human history, religion has been the place to find guidance for matters of daily living. Happiness, health, even politics, were the purview of religious teaching.
Then came science, the Industrial Revolution, and the Age of Reason. Granted, there was a lot of superstition belief at that time, but discarding everything resulted in a sterile, mechanical and largely joyless view of life. Besides which, it didn't work very well for individuals or societies over the long run.
In the past 5o years, the sciences, especially medicine, have come back to some of the core values of religious teaching. There is not only recognition of a mind body connection in health outcomes, but also a great many studies to support the material importance of one's frame of mind.
Bahá'ís operate on the conviction that much more than physical health is at stake. The health of one's spirit will effect not only personal health, but alter behavior as well, so that whole families, communities, and countries can experience benefit or suffer detriment.
