Beer Fox Tip of the Week:

German weissbier and Belgian witbier are the most versatile styles of beer for pairing with international cuisine.  Whether it be for a delectable Summertime brunch, a midday lunch or full-course dinner, the light profile of these wheat beers will easily complement a wide array of foods, both ethnic or continental.

Recommended brews are:
Berliner Weisse from Nodding Head Brewery & Restaurant, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Southampton Berliner Weisse from Southampton Publick House, Southampton, NY, USA

Allagash White from Allagash Brewing Company, Portland, ME, USA

Celis White from Michigan Brewing Company, Webberville, MI, USA

Wahoo Wheat Beer from Ballast Point Brewing Company, San Diego, CA, USA

Golden Lizard from Anacortes Brewery and Rockfish Grill, Anacortes, Washington, USA

Beer Fox Laugh of the Week:

A man and a woman walk into a very posh Rodeo Drive furrier.

"Show the lady your finest mink!" the fellow exclaims.  So the owner of the shop goes in back and comes out with an absolutely gorgeous full-length coat. As the lady tries it on, the furrier sidles up to the guy and discreetly whispers, "Ah, sir, that particular fur goes for $65,000."

"No problem! I'll write you a check!"

"Very good, sir." says the shop owner.  "Today is Saturday.  You may come by on Monday to pick it up, after the check has cleared."

So the man and the woman leave.  On Monday, the fellow returns.

The store owner is outraged:  "How dare you show your face in here?! There wasn't a single penny in your checking account!!"

"I just had to come by," grinned the guy, "to thank you for the most wonderful weekend of my life!"

Beer News:

The North Carolina Senate Commerce Committee approved a bill raising the alcohol content limit in beer from 6% to 15%.  If approved and signed into law by Governor Mike Easley, microbreweries and brewpubs in North Carolina would be allowed to sell more creative craft brews in the state.

Although some groups voiced concern over young drinkers becoming more easily intoxicated, proponents of the bill point out that these beers are considerably more expensive than brews with lower alcohol content and would likely fall into the category associated with the sophisticated craft beer enthusiast.  These enthusiasts do not generally buy beer to "get smashed," but to experience the wide variety of flavor profiles experienced in different signature styles.

Craft Brew of the Week Award:

Gumballhead -  Three Floyds Brewing LLC, Munster, Indiana, USA

Style - American Pale Wheat Ale

Body is hazy and golden amber, like looking through a stained glass window at an iridescent sunrise.  A dense, creamy head poises itself like snow atop a magnificent mountain peak, while light effervescent bubbles rise beneath in a silent dance.

The nose whets your appetite with aromas of tropical orange and dry pine needles, while an exotic spice drifts lightly through the air.  Your taste buds awaken, as if touched by a magic wand.  Malted grain and wheat, wrapped with delicately spun sugar, blend with the tart complexity of orange citrus.  Bitterness washes over your tongue with the floral juice of spiced hops, drenching it with desire for more intoxicated, quenching satisfaction.

Cheers!
