September 17 2010 Costuming Newsletter

Greetings costumer!

Did you know September is National Sewing Month in the US? That means it's a great time to fire up the old Singer and start working on Halloween costumes. Why? Because fabric stores all over are having great sales, and they're already stocked with spooky fabric, patterns and trim. Of course, online fabric stores are in on it, too. Be sure to check out the special discount code for our online partners below. It's only good for 3 more days.

Lots of you have answered the interest survey I posted at the beginning of the month. But there's still time to add your two cents and get the kind of articles *you* want to read at Bella Online. So far I've heard requests for how to build hand fans; how to make Victorian gowns; how to make costuming simple for high school theater productions with large casts...and lots more. So, what do you want to see?

Go to and fill out the survey. It only takes a few minutes, and it helps me out a lot.

Finally, I'm adding a new feature to the newsletter called "Did You Know..." The purpose is to give you hints, tips and secrets exclusively for newsletter subscribers. As usual, if you have a costuming tip you'd like to add, just email me and I'll add it in along with your name and a link to your website or blog (if you like.) So, here's this month's tip:

Did You Know...

90% of all sewing machine headaches can be traced back to two things. You either need a new needle or better quality thread. Most people assume it has something to do with the tension settings. They'll mess around with the dials and buttons until the whole machine is screwed up. So, next time your machine comes to a grinding halt or jams up, change the needle and/or change the thread before you start messing around with tension.
