"I find it so much easier to work at home (in Australia) because I understand the communication we have between each other. Even though Americans speak English, we all speak a very different language. There's a real difference in the way we relate to each other. I guess there's just a bit of shorthand that I slip into when I'm working in Australia. It's also more intimate. There are smaller crews. Basically, we don't have the money for 300 people on a set." Actor Guy Pearce in 2003

Because Guy Pearce enjoys working in Australian films, he is willing to alternate between leading and supporting roles. In this week's film, "Animal Kingdom", he plays a supporting role. It is also interesting that in the film, his character has a disabled child. Pearce's older sister has an intellectual disability.

"Animal Kingdom" is being adapted to television, and the series will premiere on the TNT network sometime this summer. Ellen Barkin will be playing the role that garnered so much attention for Jacki Weaver. The casting is an intimation that the series will have a much different tone than the film. Barkin is a femme fatale type, while Jacki Weaver is a character actress. In the film, she looks like a mother and grandmother. David Michod, who wrote and directed the film, is an executive producer of the series. It remains to be seen how input he will have on the finished product.

The Oscar nominations were announced this week, not without controversy. Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith intend to boycott the awards due to a lack of diversity in the nominees. Pinkett Smith's husband, Will Smith, was not nominated for his role as a doctor studying brain injuries in "Concussion". Both Lee and Pinkett Smith wished host, Chris Rock, well as they made their intentions known.
