"I've spent my entire career on horseback or on a motorcycle. It boxes you in, the way people perceive you. I read a lot of scripts. Most of 'em go to other actors." Actor Sam Elliott

Sam Elliott has been a supporting actor for most of his career in film. While doing promotional work for "I'll See You in My Dreams", Elliott spent a great deal of time with director Brett Haley and the two became fast friends. Haley and his screenwriting partner Marc Basch decided Elliott deserved a film of his own and the result is "The Hero". It showcases Elliott's talents and I was surprised at the emotional range the now 73-year-old actor displays. Elliott's wife of nearly forty years, actress Katherine Ross, has a cameo role in film as well, playing the ex-wife of main character Lee Hayden. It's possible that Elliott may earn an Academy Award nomination for the role, and I think it would be well-deserved.

I just watched the trailer for Switzerland's official entry in the Academy Awards Foreign Language category. Written and directed by Petra Volpe, "The Divine Order" tells the story of a group of women who organize and demand the right to vote. It is set in 1971, the year women actually earned the right to vote in federal elections and began serving in parliament. "The Divine Order" won several awards at this year's Tribeca Film Festival and is currently in a few theaters in the US. I hope this one gets a DVD release.

Currently out on DVD is a documentary on the life of filmmaker David Lynch. Titled "David Lynch: The Art Life", it features Lynch discussing his early life and the various influences on his filmmaking process. The box DVD set of Lynch's Showtime limited series that revived "Twin Peaks' is set for a December 5th release. Definitely on my Christmas list.
