The European Film Awards took place December 10th in Poland and made a bit of history. For the first time, a film directed by a woman took the top prize. Germany's Maren Ade also won the directing and screenwriting prizes for her film "Toni Erdmann". A father-daughter relationship drama with comedic elements, "Toni Erdmann" is Germany's entry for the Academy Awards Foreign Language category. The movie will be released in the US on Christmas Day.

Pierce Brosnan received a career honor, the European Achievement in World Cinema award. Brosnan made a somewhat political statement in his acceptance speech saying, in part, “There is always turbulence but I think now more than ever we need to come together as artists as filmmakers to really try and make sense of what is happening in our countries and our nations; we’ve been given that gift to do that."
