"A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end… but not necessarily in that order." French Filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard

Partho Sen-Gupta, who wrote and directed this week's featured film, was born in Mumbai, India but attended film school in Paris. "Sunrise", his second film, was influenced by both the American noir tradition and the French attitude toward storytelling. "Sunrise" circles around its subject (hence the Godard quote) and allows room for the viewer's imagination to fill in the gaps. Sen-Gupta is now based in Australia where he is working on "Slam", a contemporary drama about a young man whose sister is accused of joining ISIS when she suddenly disappears.

Over the past week, both the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced. Viggo Mortensen scored 3 nominations for his role in 2016's "Captain Fantastic". I watched the film this week and have to admit I did not care for it. I found the politics of the film simplistic, and the female characters were hazily drawn compared to the male characters. However, the movie is online and available on DVD if you want to form your own opinion.
