"It's almost impossible to get a studio to finance a serious adult movie in today's world." Paramount Studios Producer Irwin Winkler

Serious films are still being made because actors, writers and directors want to make them. It just takes more time and effort. "The Words", which I review this week, took over a decade to make it to the screen. The film was helped by the efforts of its star, Bradley Cooper, who also was the executive producer.

Natalie Portman has decided to take more control over her career by directing her first film. Titled "A Tale of Love and Darkness", she also stars in the movie and wrote the screenplay. It will debut at the Cannes Film Festival which begins this Wednesday, May 13th. Also screening at Cannes will be a British documentary about singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. Isabella Rossellini will be on hand to pay tribute to her mother, actress Ingrid Bergman. Bergman is featured on the official poster of this year's festival. I'll be paying close attention to the festival, looking for any new and exciting drama movie releases.
