"I don't intentionally choose movies that aren't going to be successful commercially. It just happens that the most interesting scripts I read are outside the mainstream. I like characters who have an edge to them, who are going to do something unexpected." Actor Ed Harris
Like many actors, Harris alternates between big-budget Hollywood action pictures and small, independent films. Two 2017 releases illustrate his strategy. "Geostorm", a disaster pic with Gerard Butler, is due in theaters on October 20th. "Kodachrome", which recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a father-son drama that was picked up by Netflix. Critics have generally praised Harris's performance, but not the film overall.
A new release that is getting excellent reviews is National Geographic's documentary on Jane Goodall, simply titled "Jane". It is set for release on October 5th. The doc uses previously unused footage from Goodall's earliest experiences with the chimpanzees that became her life's work. The footage was shot by cameraman Hugo van Lawick, who fell in love with and eventually married Goodall. Written and directed by Brett Morgen, you can view the trailer online.
