Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Guest Author - Lisa Shea

Book 4 in the Harry Potter series involves a 14 year old Potter more happy in the wizard world but encountering many more dangers.

Once again, we start out with Harry at home with his aunt and uncle, Mr. & Mrs. Dursley. Harry goes off with the Weasleys via Floo to the Quidditch World Cup, which is a huge event in wizard world. He meets the older Weasleys - Bill and Charlie - for the first time.

They track down a "portkey", or teleportation device, to get to the campground for the world cup. This is when Harry first learns that Hogwarts isn't the only wizarding school - that there actually are several in the world. The game is a great game and very exciting.

Afterwards, during the celebration, someone creates a "Dark Mark" - a sign of Voldemort's "Death Eaters", or loyal followers. Everybody panics and the kids run into the woods. Harry loses his wand, and it turns out that is what was used to make the Dark Mark. A house elf, Winky, is found with it and is fired.

The kids now go to school. Apparently Quidditch is off for the year because of a Tri-Wizard Tournament. This is an inter-school competition that kids 17 and older can enter. Amongst the normal teachers is a new dark arts teacher - Mad-eye Moody.

The Goblet of Fire is the device that chooses who from each school will be in the competition. For Hogwarts it chooses Cedric Diggory, and it also chooses a person from each of the other 2 schools ... but it also chooses Harry Potter. Harry is forced to compete, as the rule of the goblet is final.

During this you meet Rita Skeeter, who writes for the Daily Prophet (a wizarding newspaper) who is very unethical. There is a first competition which Harry and Viktor tie in. There's a break for the Yule Ball where Harry wants to go with a girl named Cho, but she's already going with Cedric. He and Ron find other dates instead.

Hagrid reveals that he's half giant and when Skeeter puts this in the paper, he hides. Soon he returns, though, and the competition continues. Ron and Hermoine and Harry go back and forth between liking each other and disliking each other. You learn that Snape used to be a Death Eater but was forgiven.

Finally the group is down to the final challenge and it ends up being Cedric and Harry. The two pick up the winning cup together - but it transports them to the Riddle House. Cedric is killed and Harry is captured. His blood is used to resurrect Voldemort. Voldemort's "Death Eaters" come to join him - including Lucius Malfoy. Harry prepares to duel him to the death.

Harry and Voldemort fire their spells at the same time, and Harry manages to escape with Cedric's body. Returning, Harry runs into Mad Eye Moody - but it's actually Barty, using a polymorph spell! In comes Dumbledore and they capture Barty. Fudge shows up and sets a dementor onto Barty, so now there is no proof that Voldemort is around.

Dumbledore tells the school that Voldemort is back, and to prepare for his return. As the group heads home, Harry learns that Rita was actually an animagus and Hermoine is forcing her to behave now or be revealed. Harry gives his prize from the Tri-Wizard tournament to the Weasley twins for their joke shop.
