Furi Kuri

Furi Kuri is also known as Fooly Cooly and FLCL. The anime was produced by the FLCL Production Committee, which includes such companies as Gainax, Production I.G., and Starchild Records. The six-part OVA series was written by Yoji Enokido and directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki. In Japan, the OVA series was released between April 26, 2000 and March 16, 2001. Synch-Point holds the licensing rights to Furi Kuri in the United States. Furi Kuri was nominated for “Best Cast,” and won “Best Comedy Series” and “Best Short Series” at the first American Anime Awards show. The anime has also been adapted into a manga.

The main character of Furi Kuri is Naota, a boy who tries to appear mature and act nonchalantly. He idolizes his older brother, Tasuku (who plays professional baseball in the United States). Naota lives with his father and grandfather, and has been dealing with unwanted attention from a high school girl named Mamimi. Mamimi is a lonely and depressed truant, and thinks of Naota as a replacement for Tasuku. During the OVA, Mamimi develops arsonistic tendencies.

Naota’s life is interrupted one day the arrival of Haruko Haruhara. When they first meet, Haruko runs over Naota with her Vespa scooter, and hits Naota on the head with a blue vintage Rickenbacker 4001 bass guitar. Later, Naota finds that Haruko is working as a live-in maid at his house. It comes out that Haruko is an extraterrestrial investigator for the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood. She is searching for Atomsk, the most powerful space pirate in the galaxy. And it turns out when Haruko hit Naota with the guitar, she created an N.O. portal in his head. By the end of the anime, Naota is involved in a three-way battle between Haruko, Commander Amarao, and Medical Mechanica.

The animation style of Furi Kuri reminded me a bit of the animation style used for Teen Titans. In the first episode, there was also a section of the anime that was drawn to look like pages in a manga. To me, this part of the first episode was a little disorienting, especially when you go from regular animation, to the manga sequence, then back to regular animation. Even though this was disorienting, it actually fit in with the tone and atmosphere of the anime.

Furi Kuri is an anime with some sexual innuendo, and is not appropriate for a young audience. Personally, I would recommend this anime to viewers who are sixteen years of age or older.
