New Zealand Wines
Guest Author - Paula S.W. Laurita

The island nation, used to film the Lord of the Rings, is also a newcomer to the international wine scene.

Located about 1,000 miles southeast of Australia, New Zealand is approximately 1,100 miles long and 160 miles wide. The cool climate is perfect for grapes. The east coast provides a dry climate that encourages the growth of grapevines. The two main islands are home to several major wine-producing areas.

The South Island's Marlborough region has gained world acclaim for its wines. The well drained soil, sunshine, and long growing season adds to the production and quality of these wines. The Sauvignon Blanc and New Zealand have had a happy marriage now for decades.

These Sauvignon Blancs are flavorful, with fresh herbs, and featuring a clean fresh lime tang. These qualities come through well since the wines are unoaked. One of my favorites is the Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc. For $10 a bottle you get a quality wine of bright, clear straw gold. The aromas are of fresh cut herbs. This is the perfect wine for a fall day. You can serve with a simple pasta dish, or a heavier poultry recipe. It also pairs well with shell fish

When exploring New Zealand wines for the first time, the Nobilo Sauvigon Blanc is an excellent choice. I'm not alone in my praise. The 2002 vintage won a golf medal at the 2003 Long Beach Grand Cru Wine Competition.
