Farm Sanctuary, Watkins Glen, NY
Most people who love animals know that many of the animals residing in a sanctuary came there in need of a home. The animals at the 175 acre Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY can remember a time in their life when they didn't have it so good. The sanctuary also has a 300 acre farm in northern California where animals there are just as happy.

Nearly 1,000 animals are being cared for and loved at the two sanctuaries. The variety of farm animals that they are helping are cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, geese and ducks.

Some animals are at the sanctuaries from SPCA's and humane societies that need assistance when they come upon animals that are left to starve to death. Many animals come from stockyard dead piles, slaughterhouses and transport accidents.

Jay, a bull, is one animal that came in from a fiery Indiana transport accident. He was found wandering around and badly burned from the incident. Rescuers came to his aid and he is now living with animal friends at the NY sanctuary.

If you think this sounds like a wonderful haven for the animals, it can also be a haven for you. What are you doing on your next vacation? If the idea of spending some time on a farm caring for animals appeals to you try looking into their volunteer program. You pitch in with chores and help work on a real farm. There are also different projects to work on.

When you spend time with the animals and learn more about the sanctuaries, you will also meet new friends. They are all like minded people who love animals and what the sanctuaries are trying to do. You will also learn about efforts to protect animals from abuse.

Is there a particular person that is hard to find a gift for? If so, you may have some to the right place. If the person you are seeking a gift for loves animals, try the adoption program offered at the sanctuaries. Possibly they would like to be set up on vacation at a farm setting that they used to read about only in fairy tales. Animal sponsorships are also another thoughtful gift.

Clean and spacious barns, nourishing foods and plenty of room to romp and play are the dreams of many farm animals these days. But for animals in NY and northern California, dreams are indeed coming true and you could be part of those pleasant dreams.
