Angela Hunt. The Truth Teller. Recorded Books, LLC. 2001; New Text Release Date: January 2006
After Angela Hunt's The Immortal, I dove into listening to this audio book with gusto. A modern, though-provoking story on 13 audiotapes kept our family intently entertained on our recent road trip.
In this riveting thriller, Lara Godfrey gives birth to a child who can sense who is telling the truth and who's lying, and this is just one of the reasons Lara Godfrey must protect her child, and protect herself as well from being silenced, even if it means the two of them must stay on the run and lead a less-than-perfect existence.
Lara desperately wanted to bear her dead husband's child, the child he had yearned for and planned for, and had placed semen in frozen storage for, while undergoing cancer treatment.
Trusting the geneticist/doctor who performs the in-vitro fertilization proves to be a tragic case of deception and selfish gain by a billionaire with plans for immortality. Lara's baby is a scientific experiment that may affect the genetic fate of the entire human race.
After discovery of the conspiracy, Lara flees, dangerously close to delivery after being drugged by her perpetrator. Resourceful, brilliant, and desperate, the young mom uses resources to change identities of both herself and the child, continually seeking a normal lifestyle. Her son's gift soon becomes apparent, and Lara must shield the boy with more vengance now. The other option is unthinkable, that her son would become known worldwide, a freak of nature used for selfish gain. And she knows there are those who would destroy truth at any cost.
The book opens a debate we face in this present, modern world. How far can we go with the science now available to us, and for what use will it prove? Evil or good? In the hands of the enemy, where might it take us?
The book is available in text, but I believe the audio adds a more real vigor and life to this story, as it did with The Immortal. Angela Hunt has hooked me, especially to her audio books.
