Here is a link to an informative article that was presented on Netwerk.tv, in Dutch, on the work of Yvonne Vonk, speech therapist and dyslexia specialist in The Netherlands.
Onderwerp: Speciale methode voor behandeling dyslexie
Even though the article is in Dutch, there is a link to a streaming video, which shows in detail the method of sounding out words by seeing the vowels in pictures on flash cards, which the student looks at and then makes a hand sign together with saying the sound.
To run the video click either 'smallband' or 'breedband' following the heading Video: in the first paragraph; (smallband is for a modem and broadband is for cable or ADSL).
Also, a teacher is interviewed in the video using the addition of 'fingersigning' to differentiate the consonants 'b' and 'd'. It is worthwhile watching the video to gather hints for teaching both children and adults with dyslexia to read.
At the foot of the web page click the link titled 'Informatiefolder over Spreekbeeld' to download a 6 page PDF folder in Dutch of the pictures used with the vowel sounds.
