1788 - The steamboat is patented in Georgia by Isaac Briggs and William Longstreet.

1790 - The first session of the Supreme Court began today in New York City.

1861 - Texas secedes from the Union as part of the Civil War.

1898 - Traveler’s Insurance issues the first auto insurance policy.

2003 - Minutes before it’s scheduled to land, Space Shuttle Columbia explodes, killing the seven astronauts aboard.

Sharing A Birthday Today…

Don Everly, one-half of the Everly Brothers (with brother Phil), was born in 1937.

Clark Gable, one of Hollywood’s legendary performers and star of “It Happened One Night” and “Gone With the Wind” was born in 1901.

Stephanie Marie Elisabeth Grimaldi, a.k.a. Princess Stephanie of Monaco and daughter of Prince Rainier and Grace Kelly, was born in 1965.

Sherman Hemsley, star of the TV hits “The Jeffersons” and “Amen” was born in 1938.

Hildegarde, renowned Vaudeville performer, was born in 1906.

Langston Hughes, poet and writer of “The Weary Blues” was born in 1902.

Rick James, the man behind such hits as “Super Freak” was born in 1948.

Terry Jones, part of the legendary Monty Python comedy troupe, was born in 1942.

Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee and star of “The Crow”, was born in 1965.

Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley and singing star in her own right, was born in 1968.

Pauly Shore, comedian and star of such movies as “Bio-Dome” and “Jury Duty” was born in 1968.

Boris Yeltsin, former President of Russia, was born in 1931.

We Said Goodbye To…

Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, Rick D. Husband, Willie McCool and Ilan Ramon were killed in the Colombia tragedy. Anderson was 43, Brown was 46, Chawla, Clark and McCool were each 41, Husband was 45 and Ramon was 48.

Buster Keaton, one of the legendary film stars of the Silent Era, passed away in 1966 at the age of 70.

Heather O’Rourke, the young actress forever known for the line “There Here!” in “Poltergeist” passed away in 1988 at the age of 12.

Mary Shelley, the famed author of “Frankenstein” passed away in 1851 at the age of 53.

1964 - “I Want To Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles

In Print In…

1862 - Julia Ward Howe’s “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” was first published in “Atlantic Monthly”.

1884 - The first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary is published today.

TV Moments In…

1976 - The miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man” starring Nick Nolte and Ed Asner debuted today.

Memorable Sports Moments In…

2004 - The NFL’s Super Bowl 37 took place. The New England Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers by a score of 32 to 29. However, the most controversial moment was the infamous “wardrobe malfunction” with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake during the Half Time show.
