1835 - Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson. When the plan went awry, Jackson beat Lawrence with his cane.

1862 - The USS Monitor, the first ironclad warship used during the Civil War, was put into service.

King Charles I of England was executed in 1949. He was 48-years-old.

Mahatma Gandhi, (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi), political leader and activist in India, was assassinated in 1948. He was 78-years old.

Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. and activist in her own right, passed away in 2006 at the age of 78.

Ferdinand Porsche, the inventor of the luxury Porsche vehicle, passed away in 1951 at the age of 75.

Betsy Ross, best known for creating the American flag, passed away in 1836 at the age of 84.

Sidney Sheldon, writer and creator of such TV favorites as "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Hart to Hart" passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.

Orville Wright, one of the pioneers in American aviation with his brother, passed away in 1948 at the age of 76.
