1835 - Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson. When the plan went awry, Jackson beat Lawrence with his cane.

1862 - The USS Monitor, the first ironclad warship used during the Civil War, was put into service.

Christian Bale, star of the films “American Psycho”, “Batman Begins” and “The Prestige” was born in 1974.

Dick Cheney, Vice President of the United States was born in 1941.

Phil Collins, lead singer of the band Genesis and solo artist behind such hits as “In the Air Tonight”, “Sussudio” and “You’ll Be In My Heart”, was born in 1951.

Gene Hackman, star of such films as “The Poseidon Adventure”, “The Quick and the Dead” and “The Unforgiven” was born in 1930.

Vanessa Redgrave, star of “Julia” and “Howard’s End” was born in 1937.

Thomas Rolfe, son of Pocohontas and Colonial settler John Rolfe was born in 1615.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, was born in 1882.

Wilmer Valderrama, one of the stars of the hit TV show “That ’70’s Show” was born in 1980.

Jody Watley, songstress behind the hit song “Looking for a New Love”, was born in 1959.

We Said Goodbye To…

King Charles I of England was executed in 1949. He was 48-years-old.

Mahatma Gandhi, (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi), political leader and activist in India, was assassinated in 1948. He was 78-years old.

Coretta Scott King, wife of Martin Luther King, Jr. and activist in her own right, passed away in 2006 at the age of 78.

Ferdinand Porsche, the inventor of the luxury Porsche vehicle, passed away in 1951 at the age of 75.

Betsy Ross, best known for creating the American flag, passed away in 1836 at the age of 84.

Sidney Sheldon, writer and creator of such TV favorites as "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Hart to Hart" passed away in 2007 at the age of 89.

Orville Wright, one of the pioneers in American aviation with his brother, passed away in 1948 at the age of 76.
