We take a look at some of the important dates in the life of U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
February 6, 1911 - Ronald Reagan was born in Illinois.
October 2, 1937 - Ronald Reagan’s first movie “Love Is On The Air” premiered.
October 4, 1940 - “Knute Rockne All American” starring Ronald Reagan as George Gipp premiered.
January 26, 1940 - Ronald Reagan and actress Jane Wyman (“Falcon Crest”) were married.
January 4, 1941 - Ronald and Jane’s daughter Maureen was born.
March 18, 1945 - Adopted son Michael is born.
June 26, 1947 - Ronald and Jane welcome daughter, Christine. The girl, born prematurely, would pass away within hours.
June 28, 1948 - Ronald Reagan and Jane Wyman divorced.
March 4, 1952 - Ronald Reagan married Nancy Davis.
October 21, 1952 - Ronald and Nancy welcomed daughter Patricia.
September 26, 1954 - Ronald Reagan became the host of TV’s “General Electric Theater”.
May 28, 1958 - Ronald and Nancy welcomed son Ron.
January 3, 1967 - Ronald Reagan was sworn in as Governor of California, having defeated incumbent Pat Brown. He would be reelected in 1970.
November 20, 1975 - Reagan announced his candidacy for the Republican Presidential nomination. The nomination would go to Gerald Ford. Jimmy Carter would ultimately win the election.
November 13, 1979 - Reagan announced his candidacy for the Republican Presidential nomination. This time he would win the party’s nomination.
January 20, 1981 - Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the 40th President of the United States. Within hours of Reagan’s inauguration, 52 American hostages being held at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran were released.
March 30, 1981 - In an assassination attempt, Ronald Reagan is shot by John Hinckley Jr. as he leaves the Washington Hilton.
July 7, 1981 - Ronald Reagan nominates Sandra Day O’Connor for the U.S. Supreme Court. She would be confirmed by Congress in September and become part of history as the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
July 29, 1981 - Ronald Reagan’s tax bill was passed by Congress.
August 3, 1981 - Reagan informed striking air traffic controllers that they would lose their jobs if they weren’t back at work in 48 hours.
June 8, 1982 - Reagan addressed British Parliament.
March 23, 1983 - During a national speech, Reagan revealed the Strategic Defense Initiative which would later become known as “Star Wars”.
October 25, 1983 - U.S. troops are deployed to Grenada in an effort to protect American medical students located there.
August 11, 1984 - A radio snafu occurred when a joke Ronald Reagan made during a radio check regarding the bombing of the Soviet Union was aired.
October 21, 1984 - The second Presidential debate between Reagan and Democratic nominee Walter Mondale occurred. When the age factor was mentioned, Reagan uttered the infamous line “…I am not going to exploit, for political reasons, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”
November 4, 1984 - Ronald Reagan defeated Walter Mondale. He began his second term in office on January 20th, 1985.
February 6, 1985 - The Reagan Doctrine was proposed.
July 13, 1985 - Ronald Reagan undergoes surgery for cancer at the Bethesda Navy Medical Center. He would be released a week later.
January 15, 1986 - Reagan signs the bill that made Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday an official holiday.
October 11, 1986 - Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Reykjavik, Iceland to discuss nuclear arms.
February 6, 1987 - Ronald Reagan officially became the oldest serving United States President.
February 26, 1987 - The Tower Commission’s report on the Iran-Contra controversy was given.
March 4, 1987 - Reagan addresses the American public regarding the Iran-Contra controversy.
June 12, 1987 - Reagan makes his infamous “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall”, speech in Berlin at the Brandenberg Gate.
December 8, 1987 - Gorbachev and Reagan meet in Washington DC. In order to eliminate a nuclear threat, both parties sign the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.
May 27, 1988 - The INF treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate.
January 11, 1989 - Ronald Reagan gave his farewell address to the nation.
November 4, 1991 - The Reagan Library was officially dedicated.
November 5, 1994 - In a letter to the American people, Ronald Reagan confirmed that he had Alzheimer’s Disease.
February 6, 1998 - The Washington National Airport in Washington, D.C. was officially renamed the Ronald Reagan National Airport.
August 8, 2001 - Ronald’s daughter, Maureen, an activist for a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease, succumbs to cancer.
June 5, 2004 - Ronald Reagan passed away in California at the age of 93.
