Star Ocean EX

Star Ocean EX
Star Ocean EX is an anime series based on the Star Ocean: The Second Story manga series written and illustrated by Mayumi Azuma (which, in turn, was based on the video game of the same name).

The anime series is set 20 years after the events of the Star Ocean videogame. At the beginning of the series, Ronixis J. Kenni, and his son, Claude C. Kenni, are on a mission to investigate a planet. Ronixis is a high-ranking official on the mission, while this is Claude's first time in space. When their ship ends up in a meteor shower, Ronixis makes the decision to divert all the ship's power to the big weapon in order to shoot a large meteor coming straight at them. The ship makes it through the storm and lands on a planet.

On the planet, Ronixis asks Claude if he thought the right decision had been made. Even though Claude answers in the affirmative, Ronixis can tell Claude had some fear. Ronixis makes a comment that perhaps his son wasn't ready for space battles after all.

Ronixis and the crew discover a machine with a strange energy field. Before entering the area with the machine, Ronixis gives Claude his phase gun so he can use it to protect himself. While by the machine, Claude ends up being transported to a planet called Expel.

When Claude awakens, he finds himself in a forest. He ends up saving the life of Rena Lanford, a young woman who is being attacked by a creature; Claude defeats the monster with his father's phase gun. Rena believes Claude to be the legendary "Warrior of Light" who will save her planet. Claude ends up reluctantly becoming a warrior to help Rena and her people.

This anime series has decent enough animation, and it manages to combine elements from science fiction and fantasy without feeling like the combination is forced. I ended up seeing an English dub of the first episode, and I really wasn't impressed with the dubbing job. I suspect the characters probably sound better in their native Japanese tongue.

When I watched the first episode, I didn't see anything visually that would be objectionable for younger viewers. Personally, I would recommend Star Ocean EX to anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
