Ghost Hunt

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

Ghost Hunt is an anime series based on the Akuryo Series light novel series by Fuyumi Ono.

Mai Taniyama is a 16-year-old orphan and a first year high school student. She spends time after school telling ghost stories with her friends. One of the stories they share is about an old building at their school that is not being used. After the story, they are approached by Kazuya Shibuya, who claims to be a student at the school. He asks to join the girls the next time they tell ghost stories. Mai, however, feels something isn't right about him.

The next day, Mai looks in the window of the old school building and sees a camera. Out of curiosity, she goes inside. When she's there, Mai ends up in danger; she is saved by a man named Lin Koujo. Shibuya comes to see what's going on, and Mai learns that Lin is Shibuya's assistant. In this incident, Mai manages to break the camera, and Lin is injured and is unable to help Shibuya. Mai learns that Shibuya is a 17-year-old who manages the Shibuya Psychic Research Center; this organization is responsible for finding and exterminating ghosts and spirits. To repay her debt, Shibuya makes Mai work for him as his part-time assistant. At first, Shibuya comes across as a rather cold and critical character, but over time, he proves that he does care for others.

Mai and Shibuya start trying to uncover what's going on at the old school building. However, they are soon joined by Houshou Takigawa (a Buddhist monk), Ayako Matsuzaki (a shrine maiden), Masako Hara (a famous psychic), and John Brown (a Catholic priest). In addition to the mysteries these characters have to unravel concerning spirits and ghosts, this series also explores the paranormal abilities that these characters have.

I thought Ghost Hunt had a very interesting premise to work with, and that the story is well-told. When it comes to the visuals in the series, I didn't see anything I would deem inappropriate for younger viewers. Personally, I would recommend Ghost Hunt to anime viewers who are 13 or 14 years of age and older.
