1861 - Jefferson Davis was elected the President of the Confederate States of America.

1870 - Today was the day that the United States’ National Weather Bureau was officially established.

1942 - Daylight Savings Time began in the U.S.

1960 - Joanne Woodward received the first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Mia Farrow the actress who starred in “Rosemary’s Baby” was born in 1945.

Kathryn Grayson the actress who appeared in such films as “Kiss Me Kate” was born in 1922.

William Henry Harrison, war hero and 9th President of the United States, was born in 1773.

Carole King the singer/songwriter whose “Tapestry” album is considered to be one of the greatest records of all time, was born in 1942.

Gypsy Rose Lee actress and burlesque entertainer who appeared in “Lady of Burlesque” was born in 1914.

Judith Light the actress who is probably best known for her work on TV’s “Who’s the Boss” was born in 1949.

Roger Mudd the news anchor and journalist was born in 1928.

Joe Pesci the Oscar winning actor who has appeared in “Goodfellas”, “Home Alone” and the “Lethal Weapon” movies was born in 1943.

Travis Tritt the singer behind such songs as “TROUBLE” and “Here’s a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)” was born in 1963.

Ernest Tubb the singer best known for the songs “Walking the Floor Over You” and “Waltz Across Texas” was born in 1914.

Alice Walker the author of “The Color Purple” was born in 1944.

Ziyi Zhang the actress who has starred in “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was born in 1979.

We Said Goodbye To…

Phil Brown who is probably best remembered for his portrayal of Uncle Owen in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” passed away in 2006 at the age of 89.

Bill Haley the singer behind a number of hit songs including “Rock Around the Clock” passed away in 1981 at the age of 55.

Gabby Hayes the actor who was often seen as Roy Rogers’ sidekick in films, passed away in 1969 at the age of 84.

Princess Margaret who was part of the United Kingdom’s royal family and sister of Queen Elizabeth II passed away in 2002 at the age of 71.

1964 - The Beatles made their infamous appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show”.

1895 - W.G. Morgan invented Volleyball.

1895 - The first college basketball game pitted the Minnesota State School of Agriculture against Hamline College. Minnesota won the game by a score of 9 to 3.
