Trends In Scrapbooking - September 2013

It seems that there is always a new trend with scrapbooking. Scrappers seem to crave ďnewĒ constantly. It is possible that the industry created that craving by how fast it produces new trends and products. It leads us to wonder, which came first, the chicken or the egg? Here are some of the current trends in scrapbooking.

1. Subway Art Ė This may also include word art. Alphabets used as design is hot right now. Letter or word covered paper backgrounds, stamps made using letters or words to create shapes, even special letter shaped embellishments can be found in so many places these days. With the subway art, the words are placed in a specific way, maybe to make a shape, especially rectangles. Here are some small examples:

C HR IS TM AS
Gifts Jesus
Joy Holiday
E MM AN UE L

Or
Joy
Noel

Holiday
Christmas

See how it starts to look like a Christmas tree? With a stamp around it or tree shaped paper under it, it would really seem like a tree.

2. Chalkboard Ė We have all seen a chalkboard. This trend is a way to copy that school or business board. It may be 12 x 12 sheets, washi tape or cute shaped stickers, but itís hot right now. It can be printed from a printer. Or maybe it is white marker on black paper. It could even be a special coated paper literally written on with chalk. It started after the subway art trend. Chalkboard is all about decorative fonts. Scrappers may create mini chalkboards for their layout, even using a frame, like a real chalkboard, and then write a title or journaling on the board. It works great for a layout base (in a large dose) or as an embellishment like washi tape (in a small dose.) To make something in this trend, the scrapper would want chalkboard paper and a white ink pen that is opaque (solid, not clear.) So, there arenít a lot of tools or expenses to create with this trend.

3. Quick or fast scrapbooking Ė This trend can be seen with the smash books and the daily layout projects. Some scrapbookers use premade kits or online products, either can help make books faster and easier. Most people have very busy lives these days and donít have a lot of time for scrapbooking, so they squeeze it in. They might use a digital program in those few moments where itís quiet. Or they might have only a few minutes a day, but they scrapbook using a system that allows for just a daily summary of their memories and lives.

There are always new trends in scrapbooking, some new product or different technique. Thatís one of the great things about scrapbooking. It is ever changing, improving and remaking itself over and over. So whether this article is brand new or years old, any scrapbooker can take these three trends and reuse or reshape them into something great a different in their scrapbook!
