Bottled Water Vs Tap Water

I was surprised at the price for a bottle of ice-cold water and at the lack of taste after a recent purchase. This started me to wondering. Is bottled water necessarily better or tastier than the water you get out of the kitchen tap? Are we paying more for the hip look and appealing advertising picturing cool crystal clear water springs flowing off a glacier mountain top? Let's take a closer look.

Natural Resources Defense Council(NRDC)

Statistics compiled by the NRDC show that sales for bottled water are on the rise across the country. This is mainly due to the mass advertising campaigns by major water bottling companies. People often presume that bottled water is safer and taste better than plain old tap water. Advertising campaigns often go to the extreme and imply that buying a certain brand of bottled water makes you appear more cool, sophisticated, or cultured. The NRDC found that bottled water is not necessarily better or safer than plain old tap water. In fact, quite a few of the bottled water brands we see on the shelves in supermarkets today contained synthetic chemicals and trace amounts of harmful bacteria. The trace amounts of harmful ingredients found in the bottled water exceeded the amount allowed in state guidelines for tap water which is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA).

What the statistics and facts in the study point out is that bottled water regulations are not as strict as those for public water resources. City and state tap water regulations are higher and strictly up held by the government. And certainly individuals with health problems should pay more attention to these surprising facts concerning bottled water.

Bottled or Tap?
A study performed in 2002 by the FDA found out something very interesting. They found that the average American prefers the taste of filtered tap water over that of bottled water. But, by the year 2006 Americans were apparently heavily affected by advertising and thought it was trendier to drink flavored and bottled waters. What these trend lovers failed to realize was that the FDA study also found that almost half of so called bottled spring water was actually tap water that has been bottled. It is important to note that the FDA regulates bottled water safety. Consequently, the FDA is tightening restrictions concerning processing and inspection.

So, the next time you reach for a bottle of that trendy flavored water or spring bottled water think about the conclusions found in the FDA study. What you see is not necessarily what you get. Never assume that bottled water is purer, safer, and tastier, than tap water. And in some circumstances tap water might be safer than that high priced bottled water.
