Halloween Safety Tips

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Halloween is the time of the year when kids and adults like to play dress up and enjoy trick or treating around the neighborhood. This is a tradition in many urban cities and small towns across the country. Halloween also brings with it a few dangers that are best avoided. Here are a few safety tips to follow on Halloween for kids and adults.

Safety in Numbers
Kids like to feel like they are very grown up and go trick or treating alone. Remember that there is safety in numbers. And that the kids should have supervision to curb risky behavior. Parents should accompany children or at least ask an older sibling to accompany very young children on their rounds.

Safe Costumes
Make sure that the Halloween costume doesn't interfere with movement. The costume should not drag on the ground or cover shoes. Face Mask should fit properly and not interfere with sight or breathing. It is also a good idea to purchase reflective tape in bright colors to use on costumes. This simple step makes it easy to keep track of kids and for the driver's to see them when crossing streets

Test Makeup
Wearing scary makeup is fun, but it could be dangerous. Take a bit of the makeup and test it on the inside of the arm just below the bend. If there is no reaction to the makeup then it is safe to wear. And remember to remove the makeup immediately after trick or treating. This is to discourage the development of rashes or any type of skin irritation.

Trick or treaters and adults should carry a small flashlight to illuminate dark streets and to make sure that others can clearly see them when they are walking down the street or crossing at the light.

Avoid Unfamiliar Territory
Try to stay in the neighborhood. Never send trick or treaters to an unfamiliar house or neighborhood. Stay in familiar areas to keep safe.

Stay Connected
It is important to stay connected. Provide a cellphone to a trustworthy member of the group to keep in touch with home base and let parents know their location.

Check Treats
Don't let the kids start gobbling down the trick or treat goodies while out or when they arrive at home. Take the bags and go through the candy carefully. Check the candy to see if the wrapping was tampered with in any way or remove candy that just doesn't look safe before allowing kids to consume any candy. Take a close look at home made treats. Toss them out if they look suspicious.

Don't Over Eat
Adults and kids share a tendency to overeat the sweet treats on Halloween. This is not the time to go off a diet or eat in an unhealthy way. Limit the amount of candy that kids are allowed to consume at one time to avoid developing more unhealthy and non-nutritious eating habits.

To show your true ability is always, in a sense, to surpass the limits of your ability, to go a little beyond them: to dare, to seek, to invent; it is at such a moment that new talents are revealed, discovered, and realized.
