Interesting Facts About Calluses

Our feet are subjected to a lot of pressure and torment during the day. We wear fashionable shoes that are too tight or fit improperly just because they look cute on our feet. We walk, run, jog, on hard cement surfaces on our feet each day. We've all seen those more adventurous types who like to walk around without shoes on during the warm months. and of course, athletes place a great deal of increased pressure or stress on their feet. Our feet are actually stronger than we give them credit for because they withstand all this stress while carrying our weight, shoes, totes, book bags, clothing and other stuff around during the day.

Researchers at the American Podiatric Medical Association state that our feet are subjected to several tons of force and pressure during the day. Is it any wonder then that the average American woman complains about foot problems. And one of the most common foot problems is calluses on the bottom of the feet. Here are tips on treating calluses on feet. First let's take a look at exactly what are calluses.

What Are Calluses
Calluses are usually formed on a flat surface like the bottom of the foot. Calluses are the direct result of too much pressure or regular friction against the sensitive skin on the feet. The skin forms a hard shell on the skin's surface to protect the sensitive area and this results in calluses on the foot. The callus might harden after forming and make it very painful to walk. Each step that those with calluses take causes pain or a burning sensation because the hard callus is pressing against the sensitive skin that is hiding underneath the callus.

Callus Symptoms
It is easy to spot a callus growing on the bottoms of the feet. The callus usually forms a thick layer of whitish grey skin on the bottoms of the feet that might feel painful to the touch.

Treating Calluses
There are lots of natural home care treatments people have used with various degrees of success. Drugstores also carry various products that are used to treat calluses on the feet. Let's take a look at a few of the popular callus treatments.

Home Treatments
Soak feet in a chamomile tea solution. The chamomile tea removes excess moisture from feet which contributes to many foot problems. Another home treatment is to soak feet in a solution of warm sudsy water. This should soften the painful calluses. Also, try rubbing a pumice stone over the callused skin to soften it up and relieve pain. Follow with a bit of Vaseline to ease friction.

Medical Treatment
Most callus problems are easily treated at home with a bit of self care, but there are special circumstances when one should seek medical treatment. Contact your health care provider if the callus causes severe pain or becomes infected.
