Fairy Tail

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

Fairy Tail is an anime series based on the manga series by Hiro Mashima.

The story begins with a 17-year-old celestial wizard named Lucy Heartfilia running away from home; her specialty is summoning contracted celestial sprits from another realm by using her Gatekeys. Lucy's hope is to join Fairy Tail, a famous wizards' guild known for overly destructive acts.

In the first episode, Lucy encounters Natsu Dragneel and his talking cat, Happy; Natsu is on a journey to search for a dragon named Igneel. Natsu, who is also known by the nickname of Salamander, is a Dragon Slayer; he can perform an ancient form of magic that gives him the physical properties of a dragon. He's carefree and reckless in nature, but does have issues with motion sickness. Happy, meanwhile, is a blue talking cat who has an ability to temporarily grow white feathered wings and fly.

Lucy meets a man claiming to be Salamander and says he can get her into Fairy Tail. It turns out the man is a fake, and he tries to kidnap her to become a slave. Lucy is rescued by Natsu, and she ends up discovering that Natsu is really Salamander, and that he is a member of Fairy Tail. Natsu offers Lucy a membership in Fairy Tail, and she accepts. Lucy, Natsu and Happy travel together; during their journeys, they meet other wizards, go on missions, and battle villains.

By the end of the first episode, I felt that Fairy Tail showed some real promise, and I thought there was a good mix of humor and action. Content-wise, I didn't see anything offensive in the visuals or hear any offensive language in the English dub. However, I don't think young children are quite ready for Fairy Tail. Personally, I would recommend this series to anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
