Chaos;Head

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

Chaos;Head is an anime series based on a Japanese visual novel.

Chaos;Head is primarily set in Shibuya, Tokyo. The main character of the series is a high school boy named Takumi Nishijo, who attends a private school. He's an otaku who only attends school enough in order to fulfill the minimum for his graduation requirements. He says he has no interest in girls in the 3D world; instead, he would rather focus on anime and games.

One night, while in an online chatroom, Takumi's online friend "Grim" is catching him up on the strange and brutal murders that have been taking place in the area (which have been called the "New Generation" Madness). After Grim leaves, a person going by "Shogun" enters the chat; they speak cryptically and send a barrage of image links. Takumi accidentally clicks on one, and sees what appears to be a murdered man pinned to a wall with stakes.

The next day, Takumi comes across a real-life murder scene that looks suspiciously like the one he saw online the previous night. He sees a mysterious pink-haired girl covered in blood pinning the man to the wall with stakes. The next day, the girl (who is named Rimi Sakihata) sits down next to him in class. Takumi is also being followed around by a girl named Yua Kusunoki, and she appears to have an interest in Takumi. As the series continues, Takumi finds himself going into a spiral of delusions and paranoia.

Personally, I found Chaos;Head to be a little odd. In a lot of respects, Takumi really made me think of Tatshiro Sato from Welcome to the NHK. And by the end of the first episode, you almost find yourself thinking that the series is setting the groundwork for a strange "harem" show.

When it comes to the visuals, there was blood shown rather prominently in the picture of the murder scene and at the murder scene itself. In addition, there were also sexual overtones in some of the images. When it came to the English dub, I don't recall anything too terribly offensive in the dialogue.

With the subject matter of murder, in addition to the sexual overtones, this is not a series for younger children to be watching. Personally, I would recommend Chaos;Head to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
