Bodacious Space Pirates

Bodacious Space Pirates
Bodacious Space Pirates is an anime series based on a light novel series written by Yuichi Sasamoto.

Bodacious Space Pirates is set in a futuristic time period where space travel has become the norm. Also in this future, there are legal Space Pirates under a declaration called the Letter of Marque.

The main character of the series is a high school girl named Marika Kato. She starts out leading an ordinary life, which includes being a member of her school's space yacht club and working a part-time job at a high-class retro cafe. One day, a couple of strangers (one female and one male) come to the cafe, and the female stranger reveals that she knows Marika's mother.

After work that night, Marika comes home and tells her mother about the meeting. She doesn't know the woman's name, but mentions that the woman had asked if she wanted to see the world from farther away than just the space station where the space yacht club maintains a section. Suddenly, the woman from the cafe and her companion come by the house to pay Marika and her mother a visit.

Over dinner, Marika learns that her father was a Space Pirate named Gonzaemon, and that he passed away a few days earlier due to food poisoning; in addition, Marika also learns that her mother was a Space Pirate. Marika's mother hadn't told any of this to Marika previously, because she was "waiting for the right time." Then the woman from the cafe drops another bombshell: since Marika is Gonzaemon's only child, she must captain her father's ship, the Bentenmaru, in order for the ship to continue legal operation.

The next day, the male stranger becomes a temporary teacher for Marika's class, and a mysterious transfer student named Chiaki Kurihara joins Marika's class. From this point, the series follows Marika and what happens after she becomes a Space Pirate.

One thing that really stood out to me when watching the first episode of Bodacious Space Pirates was the melding of the traditional animation and the computer graphics. While you can still see the difference between the two styles, I thought that this was some of the best melding of the two styles of animation that I have personally seen in anime.

As far as the story goes, this first episode sets up an interesting premise, and I can definitely see potential for this series as it progresses in future episodes. Hopefully the series can live up to this potential.

In the first episode, I didn't see anything objectionable in the visuals for younger viewers. With the content included in what I've seen, I would personally recommend Bodacious Space Pirates for anime viewers who are 13 or 14 years of age and older.
