Zetman is an anime series based on a manga by Masakazu Katsura.

The anime opens with creatures known as Players fighting against each other in a tournament. These creatures were designed as an attempt to create perfect artificial humans. Unfortunately, these creatures were made to fight, and this became a hobby for the rich to bet on. One day, the Players revolted and killed all but two humans. These Players and two humans escaped.

The main character of Zetman is Jin Kanzaki, a homeless boy who has a circular lump on the back of his left hand. He was created to be the perfect being to fight and destroy the escaped Players. However, he was released by Gorou Kanzaki, who wanted Jin to grow up as a normal human. Jin refers to Gorou as his grandfather.

At the beginning of the series, Jin, along with his friends, Kouga and Konoha, go after bad guys and try to fight for justice. At the same time, there's a serial murderer on the loose; it turns out he's one of the escaped Players. One night, Jin rescues Akemi Kawakami from a group of thugs; however, he demands payment. Later, Akemi catches up with Jin and gives him the money and her business card.

When Jin returns home, he finds that Gorou and the other homeless people that they live with have been killed. After not being able to get help from the local doctor or his friends, Jin manages to get help from Akemi. Near the end of the first episode, the serial murderer Player catches up with Jin and Akemi and attacks. Jin transforms into a creature known as a ZET, a mutant that possesses superhuman abilities that is often mistaken for another Player.

When it comes to this anime, not only is the subject matter on the dark side, but many of the scenes tend to look dark; this is due to the fact that many scenes take place at night. Some of the scenes in the first episode looked so dark, that I couldn't actually see what was going on; I had to figure out what was happening from the audio. However, I don't know if that's the way it was actually animated, or if this inability to see some of the action in the show was due to the small image I had from the stream I watched from Hulu. In addition to how dark it looks, there's also quite a bit of blood that appeared throughout the first episode.

Even though the visuals were rather violent and a little on the gory side, the story was written in such a way that I cared about the character of Jin. As a viewer, it was heartbreaking when you realized that before Gorou's death, Jin had no idea that the concept of death even existed. The empathy that I had for Jin was heightened through Romi Park's portrayal of the character.

Since Viz Media has given Zetman a rating of TV-MA, I can only recommend the series for anime viewers who are 18 years of age and older.
