Genesis is the first book in the Old Testament and is considered the First Book of Moses. Genesis is a Greek translation from the Hebrew word bereshith which is the first word used in Genesis 1:1 where it states In the beginning. Genesis is more than the beginning of the Bible or the Torah, but it documents the beginning of the nation of Israel. Other themes or beginnings included in Genesis include the origins of creation, humanity, sin, civilization, and the children of Israel from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to Joseph. Theologians believe that Moses authored the book between 1445 and 1405 B.C. Genesis contains 50 chapters and is believed to be the oldest book in the Bible written, however, there is the possibility that the book of Job was penned before Genesis.
Not only does Genesis detail the account of creation, Adam and Eve, and man's fall due to sin, it also gives the promise of redemption through a coming redeemer. Taken literally, the time span of Genesis is rather immense. Beginning with the creation of the heavens and earth to Adam and Eve and encompassing Abraham's generations to their settling in Egypt, it is impossible to put a time frame on the events transcribed in Genesis. Theologians have many theories regarding the time span from Genesis 1:1 to Genesis 6.
Some theologians hold different time spans for the events of creation where some consider the days mentioned throughout Genesis 1 as literal 24-hour days where others may venture that the days could have been one thousand years. Numerous theories attempt to define Genesis 1 and there are some that view the recorded acts of creation as coinciding with evolutionary stages. They propose a bridge between God the Creator and evolution as a means in which God accomplished his acts. Others argue that there was no evolution involved, each day was a literal 24 hour time period and it has been approximately 5,000 years since God created earth and placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Still, some theologians believe that the earth is billions of years old and that the acts recorded in Genesis 1 are not indicative of earth's creation, but rather a re-creation or redesign on the earth. They propose a theory almost as if God were to begin creating life on planet Mars or Jupiter. Though the planet is billions of years old, the recreation would be new and you could say that life began on Mars or Jupiter at the time of the new creation, even though the planet itself is billions of years old.
Though Genesis gives us an account of creation, there is no way to know for sure what time frame the events transpired. This is not the case for all books in the Bible as many clearly have historical and archaeological records to prove when a war began, which political leader was ruling, and artifacts verify dates and times. As for creation, the book of Genesis isnn't the only Bible text that points to God as the Creator. Isaiah 40:28, Isaiah 42:5, Isaiah 45:18, Mark 13:19, and Revelation 10:6 are just a few verses that state God is the origin of life and the Creator of the universe, the planets, and humanity.
