Binbougami ga!

Binbougami ga!
Binbougami ga! is an anime series based on a comedy manga by Yoshiaki Sukeno.

Ichiko Sakura is a 16-year-old high school student who is happy-go-lucky, beautiful, smart, and is popular with the boys. She has an ability to absorb Happiness Energy, which has allowed her to be as lucky as she is.

In the Poverty Realm, the Poverty Gods have sensed a strong imbalance of luck amongst the humans, and have tracked the problem to Ichiko. Momiji is sent to the human realm to try and make things right. Unfortunately, Momiji and Ichiko don't get along with each other, and their clashing personalities make up the bulk of the humor in the series. Ichiko likes to make fun of the fact that Momiji is flat-chested, and that is a sore spot for Momiji. The first episode sees Momiji trying to get some of the Happiness Energy out of Ichiko in order to make her more like a normal person.

From watching the first episode, it was obvious very quickly that this is a comedy anime. In the first episode alone, I saw or heard references to several other anime: Medaka Box, Dragon Ball Z, Lupin III, and even Bleach. Some of Momiji's mannerisms when she becomes enraged also made me think of Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Since this series is a comedy, it also relies quite heavily on exaggerated expressions in the animation. It should also be noted that there are some "fanservice" elements present in Binbougami ga! The animation style used in the series really fits with the tone of the writing.

With that being said, though, I think you have to have a strong appreciation for comedy anime to truly enjoy Binbougami ga! The series isn't bad for the genre and audience that it's being aimed at, and I think viewers who enjoy this style of anime will like it. In fact, I think fans of exaggerated comedy anime will not only like what they see, but they will be willing to follow the series to its conclusion.

While I chuckled at some of the anime references that were used as some of the jokes in the first episode, this is a series that really doesn't appeal to me personally. While I wouldn't go out of my way to watch more episode streams, I might be willing to check this out through the library at such a point that the series receives a home video release.

With the subject matter and "fanservice" elements of Binbougami ga!, I would personally recommend it to anime viewers who are 16 or 17 years of age and older.
