Dragon Ball Z Movie Collection Two

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

The Dragon Ball Z Collection Two movie box set was released by FUNimation on December 6, 2011. This four-disc set includes The Return of Cooler, Super Android 13!, Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, and Bojack Unbound. There were two slimline boxes packaged in the set; the first contained the discs for The Return of Cooler and Super Android 13!, while the second contained the discs for Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan and Bojack Unbound. The two slimline cases are housed in a cardboard slipcover.

It seems that the discs included in this set are the exact same discs that FUNimation released when they released the movies in the steelbook "double feature" sets. The only special features on the four discs are trailers; between these four discs, there are trailers for Samurai 7, Glass Fleet, Love And Honor, Robotech, Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Project Blue Earth SOS, Tsubasa, D.Gray-Man, Blue Gender, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki, Fullmetal Alchemist, Utawarerwmono, Ragnarok, and Case Closed.

One of the things that FUNimation plays up on the cardboard slipcover is the fact that the films have been digitally remastered. When it comes to the video quality, I can definitely say that the films don't look nearly as grainy as the Dragon Ball films did after they were remastered. When it comes to the audio, all I can comment on is the Japanese language tracks, since I watched the films with the Japanese audio and English subtitles. The Japanese audio was on the quieter side, but this may be due to the fact that the Japanese audio is in mono, while the English audio is in Surround Sound.

All of the films included on this set are original stories that can fit into the main storyline of the anime series rather easily; they are no longer alternate tellings of events that take place in the television series. Unfortunately, that's not to say that they are necessarily great stories. Of the four films included in this set, I would have to say that Super Android 13! is the weakest in storytelling. Animation-wise, The Return of Cooler had the worst animation when it came to the backgrounds and to the design of the new version of Cooler.

In The Return of Cooler, the villain Cooler makes a return to try to destroy the new planet Namek; Goku and the Z-Fighters come to the planet to try to save it. In Super Android 13!, three new androids come out of Dr. Gero's lab, and it's their mission to hunt down and kill Goku. In Broly The Legendary Super Saiyan, a Super Saiyan is bent on destroying the galaxy, and Goku and the Z-Fighters must try to stop him. In Bojack Unbound, the characters take part in a special Tenkaichi Tournament, but the game is taken over by a villain named Bojack who wants to rule over the universe.

Personally, I can only truly recommend this box set for the die-hard Dragon Ball Z fans that must own everything on DVD, and want to purchase this set as an easy way to acquire these Dragon Ball Z films for their collection. However, I would only recommend it if you can find it for $20 or less; anything more than $20 is too much for what you get in this set.

I wrote this review after my husband and I purchased a copy of the Dragon Ball Z Collection Two movie box set.
