Devil Survivor 2 The Animation

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation is based on a role-playing game for the Nintendo DS.

The protagonist of the series is Hibiki Kuze, an 18-year-old high school student who is on the verge of graduating. He, along with his friend, Daichi Shijima, have gone to a mock exam session. After the session, they have some tea, and Daichi introduces Hibiki to the "death face" app called Nicaea. The idea is that the app will show someone's face right before they die.

While waiting for the train to return home, Daichi notices Io Nitta, a girl he has a crush on. Hibiki and Daichi's phones notify them that a new message is arriving from Niacea; the message shows a train at their train station getting in an accident, followed by their faces. Just as the two boys try to leave the station to avoid this fate, the station begins to sway as if an earthquake is happening. The train enters the area at the same time, and the accident happens.

The Niacea app asks Hibiki and Daichi if they want to live. When they respond yes, a new app is forcibly downloaded onto their phones, and they are alive. After Hibiki and Daichi get themselves up, they see that Io is still alive; however, she is being attacked by something that looks like a demon. Demons suddenly appear from their phones to protect Io.

Hibiki, Daichi, and Io escape from the train station; shortly thereafter, the power goes out and the cell phone signals disappear. After this, the three of them try to get out of the area. During the rest of the first episode, hints are dropped that there is an organization in the government investigating what's going on, and that there's some kind of connection to the end of the world.

As I watched the first episode and was starting to understand what the basic premise of the series is, I couldn't help but think about Future Diary. While the overall plot and setup for this series is more complicated compared to Future Diary, I could still see some similarities: the "death face" app letting them see into the future is a similar idea to the texts that came from the future, and the idea of using technology in this manner in order to advance the story.

To me, the major thing that Devil Survivor 2 The Animation has going for it is the fact that the animation for the series looks rather nice. Even though I wasn't completely taken in by the story by the end of the first episode, the episode was an enjoyable enough viewing due to its art.

Devil Survivor 2 The Animation isn't necessarily a bad series, and there could be potential for it as the story progresses. However, it just didn't quite grab me enough by the end of the first episode to make me feel the need to watch more episodes immediately. Perhaps at some point down the line, I can revisit the series again after more of the episodes have become available and see if it's something that would be worth pursuing further.

The audience that will probably best appreciate Devil Survivor 2 The Animation are viewers who are already familiar with the videogame. I think this series could also potentially appeal to viewers who enjoy anime that involve technology and the supernatural. Personally, I would recommend Devil Survivor 2 The Animation to anime viewers who are 14 or 15 years of age and older.
