Date A Live

Guest Author - Lesley Aeschliman

Date A Live is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Koshi Tachibana and illustrated by Tsunako.

Thirty years prior to the start of the series, a strange phenomenon called a "spacequake" destroyed the center of Eurasia and claimed at least 150 million lives. There hadn't been any more until five years before the start of the series, when smaller spacequakes began to strike the world on an irregular basis.

The main character of Date A Live is Shido Itsuka, and he appears to be a regular high school student. He lives with his younger sister, Kotori. On the first day of school, Kotori makes Shido promise to meet up with her in front of a particular restaurant after school, even if a spacequake happens. Shido agrees.

While at school a warning goes out that a spacequake is imminent in the nearby area, and that everyone should evacuate to a nearby shelter. Through tracking Kotori's phone, Shido discovers that she is waiting for him in front of the restaurant. He rushes to find her and try to get her to safety.

On his way there, he finds a spacequake headed in his direction. Shido makes the discovery that there's a girl in the spacequake, wielding a sword. As the girl is about to attack Shido, a group of people join the scene in armor and take on the girl; one of the new arrivals is one of Shido's classmates.

Shido learns that the spacequakes are caused by Spirits that manifest into our world. He also learns that Kotori is the captain of an airship called Ratatoskr, and that she is also a Spirit. It turns out that Shido has the power to seal the powers of a Spirit in his body; however, in order to seal a Spirit, he has to make her fall in love with him.

Rather early on in Date A Live, I had the impression that it had be based on either a light novel or a dating sim, due to the various tropes that were utilized and the overall feel of the series. There was also some "fanservice" early in the episode, when several shots of Kotori's panties were shown.

By the time I finished the first episode of Date A Live, I wasn't impressed by what I saw and had no desire to watch more of the series. I found Kotori to be very annoying, although it was obvious that she was supposed to be the "cute little sister" character. I also thought that the overall premise for this series was rather strange.

Date A Live is definitely being targeted to a very specific segment of the anime audience, and I am not a member of that segment. This is a series that will appeal to viewers who are already familiar with the original light novel series, as well as to viewers who appreciate anime series that utilize the tropes associated with dating sim games.

After seeing the first episode of Date A Live, I would personally recommend this series to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
