Civil War Lecture Review

I recently attended a wonderful Civil War lecture by Dr. Lee Eugene Wilson at the Tennessee Genealogical Society. Dr. Wilson is a dentist, but also a wonderful writer of the Civil War. He explained how important the Civil War was to the Memphis, Tennessee area I live near, as well as other nearby locations. He has written three books using his Civil War ancestor as a lead character. The books he has written are Once a Southern Soldier, Always a Southern Soldier, and due out this July 2013 is his third novel, Forever a Southern Soldier. I was given a copy to read and I am really looking forward to reading these books, especially after attending his fascinating lecture; of course, a follow-up review will be posted soon after!

Most of us have an ancestor that fought in the Civil War. There were many reasons why the civil war began; some of them are economic, slavery, states rights and political. Many that went to fight never returned home. They died from gun shots, starvation, disease and unsanitary medical treatment.

Dr. Wilson gave us some great resources to learn more about the Civil War, and perhaps discover our ancestor’s Civil War history. Some of the records that were created as a result of the Civil War were
  • pensions
  • regimental histories
  • Casualty Reports
  • Court Martials
  • Widow’s Pension
  • Southern Claims
  • Statements
  • Photos
  • Maps
  • General Orders
  • Milestone Documents
  • Letters & Correspondence
  • Medical Records
  • Books & Magazine
  • Biographies
  • many more
Here are some websites that might assist you: Books:
  • The Civil War, a Narrative by Shelby Foote
  • Shiloh by Larry Daniel
  • Southern Stormby Noah Andre Trudeau
  • A Hard Trip by Ben Wynne
  • Nathan Bedford Forrest by Jack Hurst
  • The Civil War by Bruce Catton and James McPherson

I invite you to start reading Dr. Lee Eugene Wilson’s books with me. They can be purchase at Amazon.
