Lessons Learned from Genesis

Guest Author - pamela chambers

The Bible is a fascinating book with so many lessons one can apply to present day
circumstances. Genesis the first book
of the Bible, has practical lessons to apply to modern day life situations.

The first lesson that one can glean from Genesis is that God saw the good in everything he created, whether it was the stars, the ocean or man. Anyone can apply that simple concept and know since they were created from God, it is a knowing that positive self-worth must be a part of God's plan for all lives. This concept can be further applied by noting that everyone should be treated with respect, because they are God's creation.

The next lesson that can be adopted from the book of Genesis is the concept of responsibility. God gave Adam the Garden of Eden to manage. Adam was given the directive of caring for this garden before Eve came into the picture. Adam had only the responsibility of the animals and the Garden of Eden. Later, Eve was created to be a helper, accompany and encourage Adam. However, Eve listened to the serpent and encouraged Adam in a negative way, which brought Adam's downfall.

Adam honored Eve's word above God's word and not only led to the Fall of Adam and Eve, but mankind. When the word of God is not obeyed, there are consequences for compromising God's word. The Fall of Man demonstrates the lesson of how one should listen for the voice of God and to avoid any other words that do not line up with God's word. It is a good thing to develop a pattern of listening for God's voice and his presence, so one can be guided to all truth. This leads to the next lesson, which is the value of truth.

Adam was accustomed to God's presence, because he recognized God in the cool of the day. God called Adam and asked for Adam's location. Adam lied and tried to escape the consequence of disobeying God. Disobeying is a form of lying. When one lies, cheats and disrespects the word of God, it is easier to hide, than face the truth. God knew Adam's physical location, but wanted Adam to know his own spiritual location, because of his dishonesty. Running from God's discipline, only prolongs the lesson to be learned from a disobedient heart. It is best to run to God after we have messed up, instead of running away. He still loves us dearly.

Although Genesis was written thousands of years ago, we can still learn from the lessons of Adam and Eve and how they suffered from not taking God's word seriously. Swaying from the word of God is common in this busy world. We may not do exactly what Adam and Eve did, but we can disobey God by omitting to read his word because we have placed some ritual over getting into the presence of God. The lessons in Genesis are placed there as a warning not to get too serious about ourselves, but to put God first in all that we do, by acknowledging his presence and constantly obeying his word.
