We take a look at some of the events that occurred on March 24th.

Today In …

1765 - The Quartering Act is passed in the U.K. which required the American colonies to house/quarter troops.

1882 - Robert Koch discovered the bacteria that caused tuberculosis.

1944 - Seventy-six prisoners of war began the task of trying to escape from Stalag Luft III. This would later become the premise of the movie “The Great Escape”.

1958 - Elvis Presley joined the U.S. Army.

1989 - The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred today in Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska.

1998 - The Jonesboro Massacre occurred today in Arkansas resulting in the death of five people.

Louie Anderson the actor/comedian and former host of TV’s “Family Fued” was born in 1953.

Roscoe Arbuckle a.k.a. “Fatty” Arbuckle the actor known for his work in the Keystone Comedies was born in 1887.

Joseph Barbera the cartoonist who was part of Hanna-Barbera was born in 1911.

Clyde Barrow one-half of the famed Bonnie & Clyde was born in 1909.

Lara Flynn Boyle who starred on TV’s “The Practice” and in the movie “Men In Black II” was born in 1970.

Robert Carradine who starred in the “Revenge of the Nerds” films was born in 1954.

Keisha Castle-Hughes who starred in “Whale Rider” and “The Nativity Story” was born in 1990.

Richard Conte who starred in “The Godfather” was born in 1910.

Thomas Dewey famed politician and former Presidential candidate was born in 1902.

Norman Fell best known as Mr. Roper on the TV comedy “Three’s Company” was born in 1924.

Gorgeous George of wrestling fame was born in 1915.

Alyson Hannigan who starred on TV’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and in the “American Pie” movies was born in 1974.

Tommy Hilfiger the renowned fashion designer was born in 1951.

Harry Houdini the famed magician/escape artist was born in 1874.

Kelly LeBrock who starred in “The Woman in Red” and “Weird Science” was born in 1960.

Bob Mackie the famed designer was born in 1940.

Peyton Manning the Super Bowl MVP quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts was born in 1976.

Steve McQueen who starred in “The Great Escape” was born in 1930.

Star Jones Reynolds lawyer and TV personality was born in 1962.

The Undertaker the “dead man” of the wrestling world was born in 1965. (Some reports show the year from 1962 to 1965.)

We Said Goodbye To…

Madeline Astor passed away in 1940 at the age of 46. She survived the Titanic disaster although her husband, John Jacob Astor, perished.

Elizabeth I Queen of England passed away in 1603 at the age of 69.

Richard Fleischer the director of the movies “Dr. Dolittle”, “Soylent Green” and “Tora! Tora! Tora!” passed away in 2006 at the age of 89.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow famed author and poet whose works include “Song of Hiawatha” passed away in 1882 at the age of 75.

Jules Verne the author of such notable novels as “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, “Around the World in 80 Days” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth” passed away in 1905 at the age of 77.

1979 - “Tragedy” by the Bee Gees
