Today In …

1848 - Ice packed in the water caused the Niagara Falls to stop flowing.

1865 - In the Civil War, the Battle at Appomattox Courthouse began.

1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered.

1961 - The 23rd Amendment was ratified, allowing for residents of the District of Columbia to vote in presidential elections.

1971 - Charles Manson and three of his followers were sentenced to death for the slayings of Sharon Tate and others in August of 1969. The sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

1973 - The last U.S. troops left Vietnam today.

1999 - The Dow Jones closed above 10,000 for the first time.

LaToya Jackson singer/actress and one of the Jackson family siblings was born in 1956.

Christopher Lambert who starred in the movies “Highlander” and “Mortal Kombat” was born in 1957.

Lucy Lawless from TV’s “Xena: Warrior Princess” was born in 1968.

Elle Macpherson the model/actress who appeared in “The Edge” and “Batman and Robin” was born in 1963.

John Major former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was born in 1943.

John Popper the front man for the band Blues Traveler was born in 1967.

Amy Sedaris the actress who starred in “Strangers with Candy” was born in 1961.

John Tyler the 10th President of the United States was born in 1790.

Sam Walton the founder of the Walmart superstore was born in 1918.

Cy Young the legendary baseball player was born in 1867.

Lee Atwater the political figure passed away in 1991 at the age of 40.

Johnnie Cochran the infamous lawyer in the O.J. Simpson trial passed away in 2005 at the age of 67.

Edward John Spencer the 8th Earl of Spencer and father of Princess Diana passed away in 1992 at the age of 68.

Bill Travers the British actor who starred in “Geordie” passed away in 1994 at the age of 72.
