1848 - Ice packed in the water caused the Niagara Falls to stop flowing.
1865 - In the Civil War, the Battle at Appomattox Courthouse began.
1882 - The Knights of Columbus was chartered.
1961 - The 23rd Amendment was ratified, allowing for residents of the District of Columbia to vote in presidential elections.
1971 - Charles Manson and three of his followers were sentenced to death for the slayings of Sharon Tate and others in August of 1969. The sentence was later commuted to life in prison.
1973 - The last U.S. troops left Vietnam today.
1999 - The Dow Jones closed above 10,000 for the first time.
