Cats

Cats
I Love Cats is a simple picture book for infants and toddlers (ages: 0-4). Barney Saltzberg is the author and illustrator. He uses a combination of pencil, ink and acrylic paint to illustrate the children book with kittens and cats. On the pages, Barney Saltzberg has all kinds of cats. There are cats with stripes, cats with spots. A cat is climbing. Another cat is chasing a shadow.

The phase, "I love cats", is repeated throughout the children book of poetry forming a pattern. After the first few pages, children are able to read along because they know the pattern. The ability allows them to experience the pleasure of reading.

Infants love hearing the sing song pattern of the reader’s voice and viewing the different cats. The word “cat” will soon become part of their vocabulary. Toddlers will recognize the cat’s stripes and spots. After a couple of readings with the toddler say, I love cats. Allow the child to complete the sentence. Use the pictures for visual clues.

Use Barney Saltzberg’s I Love Cats to teach children about books. Show them how to appropriately handle a book. Teach the book’s features such as the front and back covers. Also, the top and bottom of the book. This activity will work with any book or magazine in the home or school. Help children become familiar with reading material.
