1918 - To help raise money for the war effort, actors Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks took to the streets of New York to sell war bonds.

1957 - The Suez Canal was reopened.

1986 - Clint Eastwood was elected Mayor of Carmel, California.

2005 - The funeral for Pope John Paul II was broadcast around the world.

Buddha was born on this day in 563 BC.

Patricia Arquette star of TV’s “Medium” and the movie “Little Nicky” was born in 1968.

Tom DeLay politician and former U.S. House of Representatives Majority Leader was born in 1947.

Betty Ford former First Lady and wife of the 38th U.S. President Gerald R. Ford was born in 1918. The Betty Ford Clinic is named in her honor.

Julian Lennon musician and son of Beatle John Lennon was born in 1963.

John Madden the man behind the camera of such notable films as “Shakespeare in Love”, “Mrs. Brown” and “Proof” was born in 1949.

Biz Markie rap artist best known for his song “Just A Friend” was born in 1964.

Robin Wright Penn who starred in the films “Message in a Bottle”, “Forrest Gump” and “The Princess Bride” was born in 1966.

Mary Pickford star of “Tess of Storm Country” and “Coquette” was born in 1892.

Katee Sackhoff who play Starbuck on TV’s “Battlestar Galactica” was born in 1980.

John Schneider actor/singer who has starred as Bo Duke on TV’s “The Dukes of Hazzard” and on “Smallville” was born in 1960. Some reports have the year as 1954.

Izzy Stradlin former guitarist for the rock band Guns N’ Roses was born in 1962.

Marian Anderson famed singer and reformer passed away in 1993 at the age of 96.

Ben Johnson star of “The Last Picture Show” passed away in 1996 at the age of 77.

Pablo Picasso the renowned artist passed away in 1973 at the age of 91.

Ryan White the young AIDS activist passed away in 1990 at the age of 18.

1992 - Tennis great Arthur Ashe announced that he had acquired HIV through a blood transfusion during surgery.
